AKU Test vs MDCAT 2026

Aga Khan University's internal entrance test vs the national PMDC MDCAT — pattern, sections, difficulty, fees and which test best suits your strengths.

The MDCAT is compulsory for every Pakistani MBBS applicant, including those applying to AKU — the AKU Test does NOT replace it. AKU runs its own 100-MCQ reasoning-heavy test (2 sections, 2 hours) only to shortlist its own applicants, so AKU hopefuls sit both. If AKU is your goal you take the AKU Test AND the MDCAT; for any other college, the MDCAT alone (Source: AKU Registrar FAQ & Sample Paper 2026; PMDC).

  • AKU review is holistic — AKU test + MDCAT + interview + transcripts, not a single aggregate.
  • MDCAT is purely score + aggregate (10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% MDCAT).
  • AKU is highly selective (~100 seats/year, estimated); MDCAT pass rate ~50%.
  • AKU costs ~PKR 3.58M/year (tuition 1.704M + university fee 1.872M); the PMDC cap is PKR 1.8M — AKU is not exempt, its total is higher via the separate university fee.
  • AKU offers need-blind admission + financial aid after acceptance; PMDC private colleges generally do not.

Which Should You Take?

The MDCAT is non-negotiable — you take it whether or not you apply to AKU. The AKU Test is an extra, earlier hurdle (5 July 2026) that only matters if AKU is on your list. So AKU applicants prepare for both; everyone else just needs the MDCAT (16 August 2026). Use this framework:

  • If AKU is your dream school: Take both. Start AKU prep 6 months earlier — its reasoning sections need practice MDCAT doesn't teach.
  • If you're a strong English/critical-thinking student: AKU rewards your profile more than MDCAT.
  • If your strength is rote memorisation of syllabus: MDCAT plays to your strengths; AKU may not.
  • If financial aid matters: AKU offers need-blind aid; private MDCAT colleges rarely do.
  • If you want maximum flexibility: MDCAT alone unlocks ~175 colleges; AKU alone unlocks one.
  • If you struggle under negative marking: MDCAT is friendlier — guess freely.

AKU vs MDCAT — FAQs

Does AKU accept the MDCAT score, or does its test replace it?

The AKU Test does NOT replace the MDCAT. Under PMDC rules a valid MDCAT score is compulsory for all Pakistani MBBS applicants and is used for final selection; AKU's own test is used only to shortlist candidates. If you apply to AKU you take both. SAT I is not accepted, and SAT II / MCAT are not accepted in place of the MDCAT (Source: AKU Registrar FAQ, 2026).

What sections are in the AKU MBBS test?

The AKU Admission Test is 100 MCQs in 2 hours across two sections: Science Achievement (40 MCQs across the three compulsory subjects — Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and Science & Mathematics Reasoning (60 MCQs, split roughly evenly into Science Reasoning ≈30 and Mathematics Reasoning ≈30, the maths at matric/O-Level level). There is no verbal-reasoning section and no writing task. Negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer applies only in Science Achievement (Source: AKU Sample Test Paper, 2026).

Is the AKU test harder than MDCAT?

Most students find it harder: questions emphasise applied reasoning and data interpretation over recall, it carries partial negative marking (Science Achievement only), and it is sat on top of the mandatory MDCAT rather than instead of it. Students report the two sections trip up different profiles — the Reasoning section is hardest for FSc candidates, while the Science Achievement recall section catches out A-Level students (Source: AKU Sample Test Paper 2026; PMDC; student reports).

How much does AKU MBBS cost vs other Pakistani colleges?

AKU MBBS costs about PKR 3.58 million per year recurring (tuition PKR 1,704,000 + a separate university fee of PKR 1,872,000), plus a one-time admission fee of about PKR 232,100; fees escalate each year. AKU is not exempt from the PMDC cap — its tuition (1.704M) sits below the PKR 1.8M cap, but the separate university fee pushes the total higher. Admissions are needs-blind and financial aid, including at least 5 full scholarships, is available after acceptance (Source: AKU 2026 fee structure; PMDC fee notification 2025).

When is the AKU test, and do I take it alongside MDCAT?

The 2026 AKU Test was held on 5 July 2026 (applications 8 March – 13 May 2026), before the national MDCAT on 16 August 2026. You take both — the AKU Test to be considered by AKU, and the MDCAT for final selection at AKU and every other PMDC college (Source: AKU Admission Brochure 2026; PMDC).

How many seats does AKU offer in MBBS?

AKU does not publish an official seat count; independent estimates put it around 100 MBBS seats a year against an estimated 8,000+ applicants in recent years (post-2023), making it one of the most selective medical schools in Pakistan. Treat seat, applicant and acceptance-rate figures as unofficial estimates (Source: AKU admissions; independent + student estimates).

How does AKU choose who gets in — interviews and preferences?

Selection is holistic: the AKU Test only shortlists, then final selection weighs test performance, two independent interviews, and your overall record — AKU explicitly states outstanding achievement alone is not sufficient, so give the test your all. The interviews assess leadership potential and how you've used your time and experiences (students describe them as ISSB-style — scenario and behavioural). AKU admits regardless of race, religion, gender, domicile or board — no quotas, no reserved seats, and no admission against donations. Minimum eligibility is 70% HSSC/FSc aggregate (Source: AKU Admission Brochure 2026).

What students on Reddit say about the AKU test vs MDCAT

Students preparing for the Aga Khan University entrance exam alongside MDCAT ask the same questions on Reddit every year. These are real threads — read them yourself, then see how the two exams actually differ.
  • how to prepare for AKU + MDCATr/DocSupport · Reddit

An A2 student preparing for both the Aga Khan entrance exam and MDCAT in the same year describes feeling overwhelmed. Commenters explain that the AKU test is a different format (reasoning, English and sciences) from MDCAT and suggest how to split prep time between them.

  • An overseas Pakistani weighs attending AKU. The long comment thread covers AKU's reputation, cost, and how its admissions and entrance test differ from the standard MDCAT route into public and other private colleges.

Premeth's take (verified)

AKU runs its own aptitude-style entrance test and a separate admissions process — it is not the same as the PMDC / provincial MDCAT that public and most private colleges use. The AKU test leans on reasoning and English alongside the sciences.

This page compares the two on format, syllabus and who each is for. Premeth's free MDCAT past papers and MCQs cover the MDCAT side; AKU-specific reasoning practice is a separate track.
