AKU Test vs MDCAT 2026

The AKU Test does NOT replace the MDCAT. Under PMDC rules a valid MDCAT score is compulsory for all Pakistani MBBS applicants and is used for final selection; AKU's own test is used only to shortlist candidates. If you apply to AKU you take both. SAT I is not accepted, and SAT II / MCAT are not accepted in place of the MDCAT (Source: AKU Registrar FAQ, 2026).

The AKU Admission Test is 100 MCQs in 2 hours across two sections: Science Achievement (40 MCQs across the three compulsory subjects — Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and Science & Mathematics Reasoning (60 MCQs, split roughly evenly into Science Reasoning ≈30 and Mathematics Reasoning ≈30, the maths at matric/O-Level level). There is no verbal-reasoning section and no writing task. Negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer applies only in Science Achievement (Source: AKU Sample Test Paper, 2026).

Most students find it harder: questions emphasise applied reasoning and data interpretation over recall, it carries partial negative marking (Science Achievement only), and it is sat on top of the mandatory MDCAT rather than instead of it. AKU MBBS costs about PKR 3.58 million per year recurring (tuition PKR 1,704,000 + a separate university fee of PKR 1,872,000), plus a one-time admission fee of about PKR 232,100; fees escalate each year. AKU is not exempt from the PMDC cap — its tuition (1.704M) sits below the PKR 1.8M cap, but the separate university fee pushes the total higher. The 2026 AKU Test was held on 5 July 2026 (applications 8 March – 13 May 2026), before the national MDCAT on 16 August 2026. You take both — the AKU Test to be considered by AKU, and the MDCAT for final selection at AKU and every other PMDC college (Source: AKU Admission Brochure 2026; PMDC).

AKU does not publish an official seat count; independent estimates put it around 100 MBBS seats a year against an estimated 8,000+ applicants in recent years (post-2023), making it one of the most selective medical schools in Pakistan. Selection is holistic: the AKU Test only shortlists, then final selection weighs test performance, two independent interviews, and your overall record — AKU explicitly states outstanding achievement alone is not sufficient, so give the test your all. The interviews assess leadership potential and how you've used your time and experiences (students describe them as ISSB-style — scenario and behavioural). AKU admits regardless of race, religion, gender, domicile or board — no quotas, no reserved seats, and no admission against donations.
