Aga Khan University (AKU) Test vs. MDCAT

Aga Khan University (AKU) in Karachi is one of Pakistan's most selective private medical schools, and it runs its own admission test. But the single most important thing to understand first:

The AKU Test format (2026)

The AKU Admission Test is a science-achievement and reasoning paper — 100 MCQs in 2 hours, across two sections, with no essay or writing task:

• Science Achievement — 40 MCQs across the three compulsory subjects, Biology, Chemistry and Physics (FSc/A-Level content).
• Science & Mathematics Reasoning — 60 MCQs, split roughly evenly (≈30 each) into Science Reasoning (applied Bio/Chem/Physics — data and graph interpretation) and Mathematics Reasoning (matric / O-Level-level quantitative reasoning). It rewards applied thinking over recall.

Students who've sat it report the two sections trip up different profiles: the Reasoning section is toughest for FSc candidates (who are used to recall), while the Science Achievement section catches out A-Level students — so prepare hardest for whichever is your weak side.

How to prepare

The paper rewards concept application, not memorisation. Ignore the old “use SAT II books” advice — SAT Subject Tests (SAT II) were discontinued by the College Board in 2021, so that material is obsolete. Instead:

• Master your FSc / A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics fundamentals.
• Drill science and quantitative reasoning MCQs — data interpretation, graphs, applied problems — not just recall.
• Work through AKU's official sample paper to learn the exact style. AKU states it has no preference for any particular type of preparation.

How AKU selects (what most people don't know)

• It's holistic — the test only shortlists. Final selection weighs test performance, two independent interviews, and your overall record. AKU explicitly warns that outstanding achievement alone is not sufficient and the outcome can't be anticipated — so give the test everything.
• The interviews are behavioural / leadership-style. AKU assesses your “potential for leadership” and how productively you've used your time and experiences — students describe the format as ISSB-style (scenario and behavioural), not a syllabus viva.
• No quotas or preferences. AKU admits “regardless of race, religion, gender or geographic origin” — no reserved seats, no domicile or board preference, and no admission against donations. They look for someone who has genuinely used their resources, in books and in real life.
• Eligibility: a minimum 70% HSSC / FSc Pre-Medical aggregate (or equivalent), and the MDCAT is still required for final selection. (Source: AKU Admission Brochure 2026.)
